How to Extract Text from an Image or Scanned Document (Free OCR)
August 24, 2026

What OCR actually does
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) looks at an image and recognizes the shapes of letters and words, then outputs them as real, selectable text β the same text you could copy and paste into an email or a document, instead of being stuck with an uneditable picture of words.
Common situations this solves
A photo of a whiteboard from a meeting, a screenshot of a paragraph you can't select, a scanned printed page, a photo of a business card, a receipt you need the numbers from β anywhere text exists only as pixels, not as real text.
How to extract it
Use the free Image to Text (OCR) tool β upload a JPG, PNG, or screenshot and it returns the recognized text, ready to copy out.
Getting cleaner results
OCR accuracy depends heavily on image quality: a straight-on, well-lit, in-focus photo with clear contrast between text and background gives noticeably better results than a photo taken at an angle or in low light. Handwriting is far less reliable than printed text β OCR is built primarily for typed/printed characters.
After extracting the text
If the source was a scanned multi-page document you actually need as an editable file rather than plain text, converting it with PDF to Word after OCR usually gives a better-structured result than pasting raw OCR output into a blank document.
